Galileo Galilei (1564-1642). Fue el más importante de todos los científicos italianos y el más famoso de los fundadores de la moderna ciencia empírica. Estableció la dinámica enunciando, por la vía experimental, las ecuaciones básicas del movimiento. Demostró, también por métodos experimentales, que el aire tiene peso. Con la ayuda del telescopio de su invención observó estrellas y planetas demostrando la verdad de la teoría de Copérnico de que el Sol es el centro de nuestro sistema planetario. Su defensa de esta doctrina, que en su tiempo se consideró herejía, se malquisto con las autoridades religiosas de la inquisición.
